An Exercise Physiologist is a university qualified allied health professional who uses the treatment of exercise for a range of acute conditions and chronic disease. Treatment with exercise has shown to be effective with conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular, metabolic and neurological diseases. An Exercise Physiologist also has the skills and knowledge to provide rehabilitation for many musculoskeletal conditions, injuries and chronic pain.
Exercise physiology uses a patient centred approach, where the health and safety of the individual is most important, and they will provide the best exercise treatment and advice that suit the individual’s needs.
While Exercise Physiologists cannot diagnose certain conditions, they can perform specific tests or make observations to identify reasons for pain or muscle imbalances and weakness to target the problem and treat the individual appropriately.
Exercise Physiology is a service that is quite often confused with physiotherapy as both provide similar services. A physiotherapist has a different approach by using musculoskeletal manipulation and massage, they can provide certain exercises for muscle imbalances or weaknesses which can be implemented in the short term. An Exercise Physiologist can provide an individual with a more detailed exercise program which can be practised in the long term in the treatment of more chronic disease or rehabilitation for musculoskeletal injuries.
Successful rehabilitation lies not just in the management of injuries and helping people fulfill their functional potential, but also in the prevention of injuries.
